Back in November, we journeyed to Ensenada to visit with Bob’s sister Susie and her hubby Vince, who were down from Yorba Linda to watch the Baja 1000. Although the trophy trucks had already finished, we managed to catch a few of the racers as they hurtled their way to the finish line. Then it was time to eat!

We started at Mercado Negro, the famous open air fish market, where we enjoyed yummy fish and shrimp tacos, a ceviche tostada with shrimp, as well as a decadent almeja ahumada. We then headed into town, since I had heard that my long-time friend Memo Ramirez, who has run Café Café for YEARS, recently opened a seafood and wine bar, La Concheria.

It was wonderful to see Memo and visit his new venue! It serves super fresh shellfish, beer and wine, and is a welcome haven from the hubbub of Ensenada’s zona turistica. Check out La Concheria’s Facebook page; it’s getting rave reviews!Later we wandered back to the harbor to check out Muelle 3, where we feasted upon the complimentary tortilla española appetizer, pulpo con huitlacoche (I love this delicacy also known as corn smut or corn truffle!) and tender-as-butter hamachi sashimi.
